Description | Viking-Period Stone Sculpture in the North Midlands: Art, Religion or Politics? Delve into the Dark Ages. In churches and churchyards in the local area, many decorated stone crosses dating to the Viking period are on display. But what do we really know about them? Were they grave-markers, boundary stones, preaching crosses or political statements? Dr Phil Sidebottom is Vice President of the Hunter Archaeological Society and an expert in landscape archaeology.
